The Spanish R&D and innovation ecosystem will meet on 13-14 February on Transfiere’s eighth edition, European Forum for Science, Technology and Innovation. The meeting is ranked as the main Spanish event on innovation and knowledge exchange between research and companies; it will once again bring together the main scientific and technological agenda from the economy’s strategic sectors, such as aeronautics and aerospace, agrifood, energy, industry, infrastructure and transport, environment, health or information and communication technologies (ICT). It will also bring together initiatives, projects and lines of work from public administrations, innovative business groups and technology platforms.

This event is held at FYCMA (Trade Fairs and Congress Center of Malaga), which is he forum’s organizer, in conjunction with Malaga’s City Council, both will gather; the Economy, Knowledge, Business and University Council from the Regional Government in Andalusia, the Science, Innovation and University Ministry, along with many professionals from more than a thousand companies, which 150 of them will showcase at the exhibition area and 4.700 research groups will be present. By doing so, the forum makes up a business platform with the capacity of hosting more than 5.000 simultaneous meetings in just a day and a half; it is in fact, one of the main tools used to transfer research results to the commercial network by the innovative Spanish system.

In accordance with previous editions, the forum strengthens its dimension as a beacon of knowledge through the International Innovation Programme, where more than 200 international experts will take part in to discuss and explore the most updated and innovative agenda, which is linked to the digital economy paradigm. By doing so, the contents that are linked to the 4.0 industry or the disruptive digital transformation processes are strengthened, as observed by the Fintech model, along with technology analysis and systems such as blockchain or the Cryptocurrency phenomenon: bitcoin or token, which are for instance, a value unit issued by private institutions.

Cybersecurity in financial transactions, achievements and challenges in defense within the aeronautical and naval sectors, as well as new drone models which are applied in agriculture and R&D innovation projects will also be addressed. Artificial intelligence will be another significant pillar from the forum, which will spot opportunities as for robotization, automation and current legislation, as well as design as a groundbreaking lever along with its capacity to relocate business strategies and models.

State of the Art of Spanish Research and Knowledge Transfer

The biopharmaceutical MSD, Telefonica, the Technological Corporation of Anadalusia (CTA), the Tekniker Research Center, Iberdrola, Renfe, university-based groups and public research organizations (commonly referred to as OPIs in Spanish) will be attending the event. On the other hand, models of knowledge transfer in the university will be analyzed and the main demands from the innovative strategy within the public institutions will be handled by ADIF, RENFE, the State Port Authority or Navantia, while a panel of experts will give the keys to competitive intelligence as for research-company cooperation.

Another main addition to this year’s event is the inclusion of a demonstration area, where new
and advanced printing technologies will be shown; Printing Innovation Zone (PIZ) through
multiple technological platforms and TRL7 prototypes, meaning its final design is virtually

Investment, open innovation and innovative entrepreneurship

In terms of investment and financing, the current tools to support R&D and innovation will be shown, and how the Venture Capital funds are invested into technology transfer initiatives and emerging companies and Cervera Transfer Projects will be presented and geared for companies that collaborate with state-level technology centers in Cervera priority technologies. Once again, Transfiere has been the scenario chosen by large companies and public administrations to look for innovative solutions to some of their current technological challenges. Throughout the event, representatives from these companies will be able to carry out bilateral meetings with those who are in charge of the candidate projects, a previous and thorough screening was carried out on behalf of the organization; as for Aertec Solutions, Calidad Pascual, Endesa, Metrovacesa, MSD, the Regional Government in Galicia and Global Omnium.

Japan as guest country and opportunities for internationalization

Japan is the guest country in 2019, and Transfiere will offer greater opportunities for internationalization and bilateral collaboration among companies, universities, startups and research groups. Thus, it will house specialized contents within the new economies, in the case of the circular -thematic panel sponsored by Iberdrola and the so-called blue, to analyze Spanish initiatives in these areas at a global level. Furthermore, there will be room for the relationship between industry and university that concerns the aerospace sector on the international scene. Collaboration models will also be addressed with organizations from Algarve in Portugal, Brazil or Japan itself.

The Japanese model will be widely studied through different presentations and meetings, case of the meeting organized by the Andalusian Agency of Knowledge (AAC) to facilitate collaboration between Andalusian and Japanese organizations. The activity is sponsored by the CESEAND consortium, the Andalusian node from the Enterprise Europe Network (EEN) - European Network of Support for Medium-sized companies (PYME) -, which the AAC is a partner.
